Chlamydia and Gonorrhoeae Testing
UniPath offers Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) testing directly from the SurePath® or ThinPrep® liquid-based Pap test. We use Digene’s Hybrid Capture II (HCII) to detect the presence of these organisms. Sensitivity and specificity compare favorably with Gen-Probe®, the other common method of CT/NG testing. In addition, testing from the liquid-based Pap test vial gives several other advantages for you and for the patient.
Easier specimen collection: With Gen-Probe®, the patient must not urinate for 1 hour prior to taking the sample. A patient with a CT or NG infection will often be urinating very frequently, making the Gen-Probe® less accurate. With HCII, the test is run from the Pap test vial, so you don’t have to take a second sample or risk decreased accuracy.
Easier specimen transport: Gen-Probe® requires the specimen to be kept at between 2 and 25ºC, the Digene test is done from the SurePath® or ThinPrep® vial. The vial can be kept at room temperature.
Easier specimen storage: A Gen-Probe® collected specimen is good for 7 days at the recommended temperature of 2 to 25ºC. The SurePath® and ThinPrep® vials can be tested for 21 days after the specimen is collected.
Faster results: UniPath will deliver the CT/NG test result about 1-2 days after the Pap result. Gen-Probe® results take 2-4 days, and longer if the result is positive and needs to be confirmed.
Facts about Chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhoeae (NG):
- Four million cases of CT and one million cases of NG occur in the U.S. every year.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control, in Colorado 408 cases per 100,000 are positive for CT and 63.5 cases per 100,000 are positive for NG.
- The CDC recommends that all sexually active adolescent women be tested for CT at least once per year.
