Herpes Testing
UniPath is now offers testing for Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 directly from the SurePath® and ThinPrep® vial. Innovative Pathology Services performs this test using LightCycler Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). This method provides a 23% increase in sensitivity and 100% specificity at correlation to viral culture. Herpes testing from the vial gives you and your patient several advantages.
Increased sensitivity: Since PCR is more sensitive than culture or cytology, the virus can be detected for a longer period both before and after an outbreak. The false negative rate of culture detection starts to rise dramatically 48 to 72 hours after an outbreak.
Easier collection: Herpes cultures require a separate collection that must be refrigerated. PCR is performed directly from the SurePath® and ThinPrep® vials, and can be kept at room temperature. In addition, you can order HSV testing any time within 21 days of the Pap test collection date.
More testing options: LightCycler PCR can test for Herpes types 1 and 2, and can also be used to test for the virus on formalin-fixed cervical biopsies. The test can be ordered at the same time as a liquid-based Pap test or cervical biopsy, or can be added on later without bringing the patient in a second time.
Risks associated with Herpes Simplex
- Confirmed outbreak may increase the risk to an unborn child.
- Herpes infection may cause individuals to be more susceptible to HIV infection, and can make an HIV infected person more infectious to others.
- HSV-2 exposure increases the risk of squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma in HPV positive women. (J Natl Canc Inst 2002 94:1604).
