Sheryl L. Asplund, M.D. is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and the subspecialty of Hematology. She also has extensive training and experience in flow cytometry and diagnostic hematopathology.
Dr. Asplund received her M.D. degree in 1995 from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Following residency in clinical and anatomic pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Dr. Asplund completed a two-year fellowship in Hematopathology at the University of Texas-Southwestern in 2001. She was invited to remain at the university as Associate Professor where she was also Medical Director of the Flow Cytometry Laboratory. Dr. Asplund has participated and presented clinical research at the national level throughout residency, fellowship, and as faculty. She is an active participant in several teleconference networks. |

Mitchell A. Bitter, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and the subspecialty of Hematology. He brings extensive experience in diagnostic hematopathology to the UniPath laboratory.
Dr. Bitter received his M.D. degree in 1978 from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Following a residency in pathology at the University of Colorado, Dr. Bitter completed his fellowship in hematopathology at the University of Chicago. He was invited to join the faculty at the University of Chicago where he was the Assistant Director of Hematopathology. In 1989, Dr. Bitter returned to the University of Colorado as Director of Hematopathology and the Clinical Hematology Laboratory. He rose to the rank of professor and developed an active consultation service. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals in the areas of leukemia and lymphoma. He is the author of several book chapters.

John Daniel Brooke, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. He received his Medical Degree from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1984, then went on to complete his residency in Pathology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado.
After residency, Dr. Brooke served as a staff Pathologist at Fitzsimons. His duties included Medical Directorship of Transfusion Services and Blood Donor Services for four years. Dr. Brooke joined Pathology Services in 1993, which subsequently merged to become UniPath. He has published in the fields of dermatopathology, opthalmology and renal pathology. |

Sherrie A. Caldwell, M.D. is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty certification in Pediatric Pathology. She comes to UniPath from The Children’s Hospital in Denver where she practiced for over 16 years.
Dr. Caldwell received her medical degree from the University Kansas School of Medicine. She stayed on to complete her residency, with her final year as Chief Resident, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital.

Shalini Chahal, M.D.
is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology.
She attended Lady Hardinge Medical College thru the University
of Delhi, New Delhi, India. Her internship was at Kalawati
Saran Children’s Hospital and Smt. Sucheta Kripalani
Hospital in New Delhi, India.
Dr. Chahal completed her residency
in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Colorado
Health Sciences Center, Denver, Colorado. She was fellowship
trained at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, in surgical
pathology. Since fellowship training, she has instructed groups
of second and fourth year medical students, provided pathology
resident training, and participated in Gynecologic Oncology,
Breast, and Tumor Board conferences. She was published in
Neurology 2002 and Neurolopathology 2003 and is a welcome
addition to the UniPath staff.

Diane D. Heasley, D.O. is board certified in Dermatopathology and brings to UniPath her knowledge and experience in this specialty. In addition, she has board certification in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology.
Dr. Heasley obtained her degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. After spending six years as a family practitioner, she entered a residency program in Pathology at Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Center - Michigan State University, and completed it at Albany Medical Center Hospital - Albany Medical College. She immediately began a fellowship in Dermatopathology with Dr. Martin C. Mihn, who has been the senior dermatopathologist at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital for over 30 years, and is world-renowned in the field of malignant melanoma. She has done research on basal cell carcinoma, and has published research articles, as well as a book chapter on malignant melanoma. After completing her fellowship, she worked as a dermatopathologist in the Department of Pathology at Albany Medical Center Hospital until January of 1997, when she moved to Denver and began working for UniPath. Since then she has devoted her time and continuing education to Dermatopathology.

W. Jeff Hodges, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and for many years has been the Medical Director of the Pathology Department at North Suburban Medical Center. Dr. Hodges has extensive experience with the esoteric clinical tests referred from the hospitals to the reference laboratories. He also has expertise with the large volume of testing referred by physicians’ offices in the Rocky Mountain region. Because of his varied experience in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology, he brings to the group a broad base as a generalist pathologist.
Dr. Hodges is from Texas where he attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and continued with his internship at Baylor affiliated hospitals. He then moved to Colorado where he completed his residency in Pathology at Mercy Medical Center in Denver.

Sharon Kelly, D.O. is a graduate of the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, MO. She completed her internship and residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Dr. Kelly was fellowship trained at The Children’s Hospital in Denver, CO. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Kelly serves on numerous hospital committees, as well as the AABB Pediatric Hemotherapy Committee nationally. Additionally, she serves as the Medical Director of Colorado Committee of Blood Donations. |

Walter E. Madsen, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and he specializes in Surgical Pathology and Immunohistochemistry.
Dr. Madsen attended Colorado College, graduating with a B.A. in Biology in 1977. He then attended St. Louis University School of Medicine, graduating with the M.D. degree in 1983. After medical school, he went to the University of Illinois at Chicago and Cook County Hospital for internship and residency training in General Surgery. In addition to clinical surgery duties, he did research on the effect of steroid hormones on sarcoma tumor cell growth, as an American Cancer Society Oncology Fellow. In 1987, he went to the University of Colorado for Pathology residency, and finished training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in 1990. He was then a fellow in Surgical Pathology at Washington University in St. Louis, Barnes Hospital, with Dr. Louis P. Dehner. Dr. Madsen practices primarily Surgical Pathology at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital, where he is Vice Chairman of the department of Pathology, and the director of Anatomic Pathology.

James L. McQuaid, M.D., is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. He is coordinator of chemistry for the Centura Metro Denver Hospitals.
Dr. McQuaid is from Denver and attended the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Colorado. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Colorado. He returned to the University of Colorado Health and Sciences Center to complete his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology after completing a straight internship in pathology at University of California School of Medicine, San Diego.
For a brief time he was an assistant professor of surgical pathology at the University of Miami School of Medicine before returning to Colorado and working primarily at Porter Adventist Hospital since 1976.

Thomas A. Merrick, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and the subspecialty of Medical Microbiology.
Dr. Merrick received his Medical Degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. He did his Pathology residency at Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver, followed by a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. After joining the U.S. Army, he was stationed at the 3rd Field Hospital, Saigon where he gained extensive experience in tropical infectious diseases. He has been on the C.A.P. Commission on Laboratory Accreditation since 1986, most recently as Education Commissioner and Chairman of the Safety Committee.

Michael L. Miller, D.O. is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and the subspecialty of Hematopathology. He will enhance UniPath’s Hematopathology Services and provide expertise in Clinical Pathology. Dr. Miller is a graduate of the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. He completed a rotating internship at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia and his residency training in pathology at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California. He received his Fellowship training in Hematopathology at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Miller was Director of Laboratory Hematology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation for several years before becoming Director of Clinical Pathology and Professor of Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, where he also served as the Medical Director of Pathology at the Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and Medical Director of Veripath Laboratories. Dr. Miller’s interests include leukemia, lymphoma, coagulation, flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostics.

Joseph Olivere , M.D. is board certified in Dermatopathology and in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
Dr. Olivere joined UniPath on August 1, 2004. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis, Tennessee (1990-1994). Dr. Olivere completed a clinical internship at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, Texas (1994-1995), followed by his Residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (1995-1999) in the combined Wilford Hall Medical Center (WHMC) and BAMC program in San Antonio. Dr. Olivere served as Chief of Anatomic Pathology and Medical Director of Microbiology & Outpatient Clinic Laboratories at Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas from 1999 to 2003. Dr. Olivere completed his Dermatopathology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore, Maryland in June 2004. He is actively involved in the national dermatopathology community and in dermatopathology education.

Sanford D. Peck, M.D.
is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. He specializes in Coagulation and Hematopathology. Dr. Peck also is a fellow in the American Society of Clinical Pathology and College of American Pathologists.
Dr. Peck comes from Rochester, NY, and is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He did a rotating internship and Pathology residency at Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. During that time has was awarded a Clinical Fellowship through the American Cancer Society. He spent two years in the U.S. Army at Brooke Army Hospital and the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research. Since that time he has directed the Hematology and Coagulation laboratories here, and developed a sophisticated and well-staffed coagulation consultation service. He is published and has presented on this subject at numerous conferences across the U.S.

Ernest Sartorio, Jr., M.D., is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. He is clinical coordinator of Microbiology for Adventist Health System Hospital Laboratories.
Dr. Sartorio received his medical degree from Howard University in Washington, DC. He was elected Alpha Omega Alpha in medical school. He completed his internship and residency at Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Sartorio is Medical Director of Porter/Littleton/Parker Adventist Hospital Laboratories. Dr. Sartorio serves on the Medical Executive Committee of the Porter and Littleton Adventist Hospitals.

Paul M. Scheele, Jr., M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. He has expertise in fine needle aspiration and is well known for his attention to patient concerns.
During his undergraduate education, Dr. Scheele worked with NASA doing research on jet engines and the space shuttle. He attended St. Louis University School of Medicine and went on to complete his residency in Pathology at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Following his residency training, he immediately went into a fellowship in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Scheele is an active member of many local and national professional affiliations such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Dr. Scheele has published numerous articles on subjects ranging from turbo jet engines to bone tumors. Dr. Scheele received an NIH fellowship for viral research, and won the Lockheed Trident Missile design in 1981.

Karim E. Sirgi, M.D.
is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with
subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology. He is currently
President of Unipath P.C as well as the Medical Staff at Presbyterian/Saint
Luke’s Medical Center, a tertiary care facility in the
heart of Denver. Dr. Sirgi is also a member of the board of
Unipath LLC as well as Chair of the HealthOne Presidents Council
and Medical Director of laboratories at The Urology Center
of Colorado.
Dr. Sirgi is a diplomate of
the Saint Joseph University School of Medicine, Beirut, Lebanon.
He completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology
at Booth Memorial Medical Center in New York, a fellowship
in surgical pathology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University
Medical Center in Saint Louis and an additional subspecialty
fellowship in general and interventional cytopathology at
MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Sirgi was on the
faculty staff at both institutions after completion of each
fellowship. He was chairman of the Pathology Department at
Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center from 1997-2003
and president of the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists
in 2003/2004. He is also a former member of the UniPath board
of directors, of the College of American Pathologists Cytopathology
Resource Committee and of the Gynecology Oncology Group pathology
review committee. He was voted best pathologist in Denver
by his peers in 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007
(5280 Magazine). |

James M. Small, M.D., Ph.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and the subspecialty of Medical Microbiology. Dr. Small serves as the advisory physician to UniPath’s Information Systems department. He has extensive interest and experience in computers and is a past member and former vice-chair of the College of American Pathologists Medical Informatics Committee. [He is also former Chair of the College of American Pathologists’ Public Affairs committee and sat on their Internet Editorial Board.]
Dr. Small attended Duke University Medical Center’s Medical Scientist Training Program, graduating with his M.D. and Ph.D. in Medical Mycology. He undertook residency training at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Pathology. He worked for three years at Associated Pathologists Laboratory in Las Vegas, Nevada, a large regional reference laboratory and Anatomic Pathology service. Dr. Small is active in several professional organizations including being a past President of the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists. He is a member of various advisory committees, and is a Study Pathologist for several Gynecologic Oncology Group clinical trials. Dr. Small shares his wealth of knowledge in the fields of Medical Mycology and Computers through numerous publications and teaching appointments.

Andrea Kathleen Sotelo, M.D. is board certified in anatomic pathology. She received her medical degree from The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver in 1998. She then completed her internship (OB/Gyn), residency (anatomic pathology) and fellowship training (surgical pathology) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital affiliated with Washington University in St. Louis, MO. During that time, she participated in a number of research projects and published several journal articles. Dr. Sotelo joined UniPath in August 2004. |

Wendell C. Speers, M.D. is board certified in Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Speers is from State Center, Iowa and obtained his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Speers performed as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA. Dr. Speers spent nine years at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center as an Assistant Associate Professor. He is also well published in the field of anatomic pathology, and lectured as in invitee during the years of 1981 through 1986. |

Philip T. Stoffel, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and his primary specialty is in Surgical Pathology. For several years, he has been the Medical Director of Pathology at the Medical Center of Aurora - South Campus.
Dr. Stoffel attended University of Colorado Medical School followed by an internship in Surgery at UCHSC and then a residency in Pathology at Presbyterian Medical Center.

R.Weslie Tyson, M.D. is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Pediatric Pathology. He comes to UniPath from The Children's Hospital in Denver where he was Clinical Assistant Professor bringing extensive experience in the field of Placental, Peri-natal and Pediatric Pathology.
Dr. Tyson received his medical degree with Honors at Colorado School of Medicine then continued to complete his residency as Chief Resident at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He did a concurrent Fellowship year in clinical genetics. Following this Dr. Tyson completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Anatomic Pathology at British Columbia Children's Hospital in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Dr. Tyson has received honors and awards for several research projects in which he has participated.

Michael G. Venrick, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and the subspecialty of Cytopathology. He is involved with UniPath’s fine needle aspiration outpatient service.
Dr. Venrick grew up in a rural farm community in Colorado. After earning his Medical Degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, he went on to complete his internship/residency program with the U.S. Army in San Francisco. He completed his fellowship in Cytopathology at George Washington University in 1991. Along with his many professional affiliations, he recently served a year as president of the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists. His interests include Pap test cytology, Fine Needle Aspiration, and breast pathology. He is currently the President of UniPath, P.C.

Elaine D. Wagner, M.D., is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology with subspecialty board in Cytopathology. She is Medical Director for Platte Valley Medical Center Laboratory and the Director of Cytopathology at Porter/Littleton/Avista Adventist Hosptials.
Dr. Wagner attended medical school and preformed her residency at University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She completed her fellowship in Cytopathology at Baylor College of Medicine.

Cindy J. Warren, M.D., is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. She is the Medical Director of Avista Adventist Hospital Laboratory and co-coordinator of the quality assurance program at Porter/Littleton/Avista Hospitals.
Dr. Warren is from Missouri where she attended the University of Missouri School of Medicine receiving her medical degree. She completed her residency as Chief Resident at St. Louis University School of Medicine, and completed a Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecologic Pathology at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center.

Gordon V. Webb, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. He is the Medical Director of Anatomic Pathology at Porter, Littleton and Parker Adventist Hospitals. Dr. Webb is the physician lead of clinical laboratory sections, coagulation, hematology, and urinalysis for Avista, Littleton, Parker and Porter Adventist Hospitals.
Dr. Webb is from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He attended medical school at University of Oregon Health Science Center in Portland, Oregon graduating Cum Laude. Following medical school, he completed his residency at University of Colorado Health Science Center, Denver. Dr. Webb completed his Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford, California.

C. Giorno, M.D. is board certified in Clinical and

He is Medical Director of UniPath Anatomic Pathology laboratory
and diagnostic laboratory for Immunopathology.
Dr. Giorno obtained his medical
degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Dr. Giorno is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine
at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. In addition,
Dr. Giorno is an active member of the 9HealthFair Medical
Advisory Committee. |

David H. Lowell,
M.D. is board Certified in Clinical and Anatomic
Pathology and has his subspecialty boards in Cytopathology.
He devotes much of his time and continuing education to the
field of Cytopathology. In addition, he is involved with UniPath’s
fine needle aspiration outpatient service.
Dr. Lowell grew up in the Kansas
City area. After completing his Medical School Education at
the University of Kansas, he moved to Colorado where he completed
his internship and residency at Presbyterian Medical Center.
He retains membership in many Cytopathology related professional
organizations, and hosted the 1996 combined national conventions
of the American Society of Cytopathologists and American Society
of Cytotechnologists in Denver. These are the benchmark organizations
of the profession of Cytopathology. |

Paul B. Visconti,
M.D. is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic
Pathology and his primary specialty is in Surgical Pathology.
For several years he was the Medical Director of Pathology
at Columbia Medical Center of Aurora - South Campus.
Dr. Visconti went to Medical
School at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. He went
on to complete an internship at Morristown Memorial Hospital
in New Jersey and residencies at the University of Colorado
Health Sciences Center and MD Anderson Hospital. He has been
an active member of many local and national professional affiliations
such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, College
of American Pathologists, American Medical Association, Aurora-Adams
