Urology Testing

As a generation of people gets closer to retirement, the field of urologic medicine is growing at an accelerating pace. UniPath’s pathologists see an ever-increasing number of urologic cases, including everything from urine cytology and nephrologic fine needle aspirates, to prostate needle biopsies and bladder biopsies, to resection or radical procedures such as prostatectomies, radical nephrectomies, and orchiectomies. Because of our hospital affiliations and database capabilities, we are able to correlate a patient’s previous biopsies with new ones (when we have provided a diagnosis for the patient in the past), and when available, this historical information is clearly advantageous in providing the highest levels of diagnostic care. The growing volumes of cases referred to UniPath in urologic pathology supplies our doctors with a wealth of new experience, knowledge, and training.

UniPath also has sufficient volumes to bring in specialized techniques such as cytokeratin immunohistochemistry to sort out complex prostate biopsies, often same day. Dr. James Small, a UniPath physician who sees many of these cases working out of Presbyterian/St. Luke’s in Denver, says, “Pathologists are just like any other doctors; the more we see, the better we get.” Furthermore, our commitment to continuing education takes our physicians to numerous conferences and other training opportunities, and we have established relationships with national experts (at Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic, for example) with whom we will consult on particularly difficult cases.

At UniPath, we are your partner in patient care. We provide highly informative, urology-specific reports (click to see sample), and our physicians are available for consultation and personal service to help care for your patients.

UniPath is pleased to offer Vysis UroVysion™ FISH technology for bladder cancer recurrence. UroVysion™ detects chromosomes 3, 7 and 17 and the loss of the 9p21 locus in voided urine from patients previously diagnosed with mothelial carcinoma of the bladder providing a noninvasive monitoring tool for recurrence. UniPath is providing this technology locally, eliminating the need to ship urines out of state and risk deterioration of specimen cells. The following provides specimen submission and turn around time for UroVysion™ FISH testing.
